How To Make a Trash Can Rain Barrel

October 26, 2012 By Prepared Mom

32 gallon rubbermaid trash can

Rubber trash cans have a number of emergency uses. Today I picked up this 32 gallon one for $12. I can usually find them on sale for under $10 but I needed one quickly today. I make sure to buy the ones that are the thicker rubber, not the cheaper flimsy plastic ones. This one is made by Rubbermaid. I want to stress they are not food grade and not meant to store open bags of … [Read more...] about How To Make a Trash Can Rain Barrel

Items gathered for DIY Faraday Cage Project

This week I tried to build a Faraday Cage. I failed. So instead of this post being about how to build a safe place to keep your electronics, it is now about how I failed at it. For those of you wondering what the heck I am talking about...A Faraday Cage is a shield that blocks external electric fields. Regardless of its name, it has nothing to do with a LOST character. Why … [Read more...] about Faraday Cage Fail

What Is Self Reliance?

October 23, 2012 By Prepared Mom

Self reliance is the ability to provide for you and your families basic needs without outside help. Sadly, most American families rely so heavily on outside factors that they could not be self reliant for more than a few days if need be. The phrase "The First 72 Is Up To You" is a common slogan used by government agencies when encouraging families to be able to sustain their … [Read more...] about What Is Self Reliance?

Adding Coffee To Your Prepping Supplies

July 10, 2012 By Prepared Mom

Coffee Beans should be a part of your prepping supplies.

Without my coffee I will be a zombie pretty quick! Are you used to grabbing your morning cup of Joe? You may want to include a way to have your morning coffee then! The other day I was walking through Target when the lure of Starbucks pulled me closer. After buying my iced coffee I eyed these Starbucks Via Iced Caramel packages sitting on the counter. Why Worry About Preparing?

Preparedness for a disaster makes a lot of sense. With recent and predicted events like Hurricane Sandy, The Colorado Wildfires, Fiscal Cliffs, and rising food and gas costs just in 2012 there is no denying that things are changing in our world. Whether or not you believe "The End of the World As We Know It" is near there are plenty of everyday things to worry about: loss of a job, health emergency, local weather events to name a few.

I find that I worry less about the big "what if's" out there the more emergency planning my family does to deal with the unexpected. I will share the survival tips and tricks I have learned while on this preparedness journey and hope that you join in with lots of comments. We all have a lot to learn from one another.

Now, lets get started prepping! Pick a post and start reading. At the end of every post the blog randomly selects three more survival posts for you to check out. Set aside 10 minutes a day to build your preppers knowledge base. We can never be done learning or prepping, right?
