How to Dehydrate Apples

November 20, 2012 By Prepared Mom

apple on peeler/slicer/corer

Dehydrating food is a skill that all preppers should master and dehydrated apples are probably the easiest food to learn with.  But I would be seriously remiss in letting anyone think that I store dehydrated apples as long term food storage in this house. Truth is, the second my kids see this bag on the counter they will be gone. The work involved used to make the fact that … [Read more...] about How to Dehydrate Apples

Can Your Children Light A Match? Todays Sunday Skill

November 18, 2012 By Prepared Mom

lit match

Last week I wanted to light a sugar cookie candle in the living room. I reached for the disposable candle lighter and it was out of butane. No biggie, I sent the 16 year old downstairs for one of the many boxes of matches stored and asked him to do it for me while I was doing something else. Then I heard something that sent me reeling into a mom failure mode: "Mom, how do you … [Read more...] about Can Your Children Light A Match? Todays Sunday Skill

This is part two of a Family Emergency Plan series written by our contributing writer, Prepper Lush. Make sure to read Family Emergency Plan #1: Talking to Your Family. Make a family information form (list of your … [Read more...] about Family Emergency Plan #2: Make a Family Information Form

beginning prepping

Getting started prepping is overwhelming! Thinking of all the possible that can go wrong in our lives is not a pleasant thing. Beginning prepping can cause real fear and panic and a sense of "why bother?" As a former teacher, I often think of learning things in a style called "chunking". I approach prepping the same way and would encourage you to as well. Here is how chunking … [Read more...] about Beginning Prepping: Breaking Down Prepping Into Bite Sized Chunks

The Importance of a Well Prepped Map

November 5, 2012 By Prepared Mom

Printed maps as a part of your emergency and disaster planning

When was the last time you used a printed map? In this day and age of GPS and Smartphones not many of us do anymore. It's a skill many of our kids only get a glimpse of in 2nd grade Social Studies. But printed maps have an important place in the prepared home. Looking at the lessons people are learning from Hurricane Sandy got me thinking how a printed map would have been … [Read more...] about The Importance of a Well Prepped Map

Contest: Win a Copy of Survival Mom

Survival Mom Book by Lisa Bedford

I am a big believer in that the first investment a prepper should make is a survival library. I was lucky enough that one of the first survival books I picked up was Survival Mom by Lisa Bedford. Doomsday Preppers had just started airing and in my panic mode, Lisa seemed like a friendly face to turn to.I devoured her blog, The Survival Mom in just days and then quickly ordered … [Read more...] about Contest: Win a Copy of Survival Mom

Why Worry About Preparing?

Preparedness makes more sense now than ever.

As we move through 2026, it’s clear that the world is shifting in ways many of us can feel — even if we can’t always predict what’s next. In recent years we’ve seen global supply chain disruptions, international conflicts affecting energy and food markets, extreme weather events across multiple continents, cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, economic uncertainty, inflation, and rising costs for everyday essentials.

From global pandemics to geopolitical tensions and natural disasters happening around the world, the message is the same: stability isn’t guaranteed.

Whether or not you believe we’re headed toward a major global reset, there are plenty of everyday realities that make preparedness practical — not extreme. Job loss. Health emergencies. Severe storms. Power outages. Supply shortages. Economic downturns.

Preparedness isn’t about panic.

It’s about positioning your family to respond calmly when life throws the unexpected your way.

We’ve found that the more intentional emergency planning my family does, the less I worry about the big “what ifs.” When you have food storage in place, backup plans for power and water, and practical skills to lean on, uncertainty feels manageable.

That peace of mind is powerful.

Here at Simply Preparing, we share the survival tips, preparedness strategies, and practical systems we’ve learned along the way — from pantry building and food storage to emergency planning and self-reliance skills. Our goal is not to create fear, but to create confidence.

And we hope you’ll join the conversation.

Preparedness is not a solo journey. We all bring different experiences, lessons, and perspectives to the table. Share what you’ve learned. Ask questions. Leave comments. We grow stronger and smarter together.

Now, let’s get started prepping.

Pick a post and begin reading. At the end of every article, the blog will randomly suggest three additional preparedness posts to explore. Set aside just 10 minutes a day to build your knowledge base. Small, consistent steps add up faster than you think.

Because when it comes to preparedness, we’re never truly “done” learning — and we’re never wrong for being ready.

Let’s prepare wisely.
